Why Virginia Mountain Land?

VIRGINIA MOUNTAIN LAND - BUY IT, PLAY ON IT OR JUST LOOK AT ITS BEAUTY

virginia mountainsWhen you think of Virginia mountain land in the Blue Ridge Mountains you think of Mount Rogers in Grayson County. It comes in at 5729 feet above sea level. In contrast, the high point in Washington, DC is only 429 feet, lower than the 555 foot Washington Monument.

What is tall enough to be called a mountain? I don't think that's something many of us think about. In Virginia thre are no official criteria for distinguishing a "mountain" from a "hill". Local custom determines place names and the board of Geographic Names has no standards to override common names created by local residents.

For many years, Virginians thought the highest spot in the state of Virginia was at the Peaks of Otter, because Flat Top and Sharp Top stood out as distinct peaks compared to the adjacent ridges.

Today, we know that Grayson County is the "roof" of Virginia, with the highest average elevation and the highest peaks. Whitetop Mountain appears to be taller than Mount Rogers. It too stands slightly apart from other places, and the treeless "bald" appearance also makes it more eye-catching than nearby Mount Rogers. However, if the red spruce covering Mount Rogers and blocking the view from the top continue to die off, then there's a chance that the highest point in Virginia will be easier to recognize.

All of these wonderful mountain adventures are available to you when you come to visit and maybe buy some mountain land in the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the mountain ranges in Virginia - a subrange of that wonderful Appalachian Mountain chain.

Within the mountains of Virginia there are many adventures. For example, Carroll County hosts two portions of a 57 mile long state park that follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way and parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles. The park offers biking, hiking, campling, canoeing, fishing and great mountain land scenery - not to mention their legacy steeped in history. Birding and wildlife viewing are superb. Chestnut Creek Falls offers a captivating sight. This park also serves as a link to numerous other outdoor recreational areas, including a town park in Fries, Mt. Rogers National Recreational Area, four Department of Game and Inland Fisheries boat launches and Shot Tower Historical State Park. New River Trail is just minutes from Claytor Lake State Park and Grayson Highlands State Park.

We could go on and on about the Virginia Mountain land! Come and visit and see for yourself.
